Ian Mcclurg Hiker Accident, Death: Remembering Ian MacLurg

Shannon Reischling Denver, CO Death: In Loving Memory Of Shannon Reischling

The news of Ian MacLurg’s passing reached me yesterday, and I have been struggling to find words that can capture the depth of loss, disbelief, and sorrow I feel—not just for myself, but for his family: his parents, siblings, and all those who cherished him. I cannot imagine the way his absence has fractured their world.

Ian was my student at Black Forest Academy, Class of 2001, and it was an honor to know him both as a teacher and as a play director. He was more than a student—he was a spark of adventure, curiosity, and unbridled energy. I also became a reluctant accomplice in his youthful schemes, often heart-palpitating adventures that tested the limits of daring and sometimes the patience of authority. One particularly memorable escapade involved Ian and his friends staging a “masked and armed” mission to ask a young lady to the Junior-Senior banquet—an act of ingenuity that ended with nearly a dozen German police officers descending on our tiny village.

What always struck me about Ian were his eyes: the kindness, playfulness, and melancholy reflected a soul that was at once daring and contemplative. He was a loyal friend, a curious mind, and a dreamer with a restless, adventurous spirit. Though life had its challenges, Ian found joy in exploring the world. In recent years, he traveled to breathtaking destinations, culminating in his ambitious six-month trek along the Pacific Crest Trail, a journey from Mexico to Canada that had filled him with excitement and purpose.

Tragically, it was on this adventure that a medical event ended his life. Today, I reflect on how blessed I was to know such a luminous soul, even briefly. His spirit, captured in old photos and recent posts, reminds us of a life lived with curiosity, courage, and joy. Please hold Ian’s family in your prayers as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
